About This Call
The Hawai`i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (HSFCA) and Department of Education (DOE) seek professional visual artists to create commissioned works for Hawaii public schools. Up to three school projects will be initiated in the 2013-2014 school year, each budgeted at a maximum of $100,000. The budget is paid directly to the artist in phases over an estimated three-year period (October 2014-December 2017).
Eligibility: Artists who were born and/or educated in Hawaii, obtained major artistic training in Hawaii, are Hawaii residents, or have made significant impact in Hawaii through exhibitions, installations, or commissions. The program commissions individual artists only; artist collaboratives will not be considered.
Selected artists will work with school communities to develop works reflecting the school's environment, curriculum, cultural values, and aesthetics. Artists must provide a residency equivalent to 14-16 days of instruction, conduct a minimum of one in-service training workshop for teachers, one presentation to the school and community, and one studio visit for students and teachers (if applicable). Culminating works may include sculpture in metal, stone, glass, or concrete, or wall murals using ceramic/mosaic tiles, metal, glass, or concrete. Selection criteria include artistic merit, appropriateness of medium and style, experience with similar-scale projects and public agencies, and experience working with students. Application deadline: March 23, 2014. Contact Trisha Lagaso Goldberg at [email protected] for questions.
