About This Call
The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts, Inc. (BOPA) announces the eighth edition of the Janet & Walter Sondheim Prize, awarding a $25,000 fellowship to a visual artist or visual artist collaborators living and working in the Baltimore region. The prize is presented in conjunction with the annual Artscape juried exhibition and produced with partners The Walters Art Museum (WAM) and the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Approximately six finalists will be selected for final review, with their work exhibited in the Special Exhibition Gallery at The Walters Art Museum. An exhibition of semi-finalists' work will be shown in the Decker and Meyerhoff galleries at MICA during Artscape weekend (July 19-21, 2013).
The fellowship winner will be selected after review of installed art and interviews with each finalist by the jurors. Remaining finalists not selected for the fellowship will each receive a $2,500 honorarium. Artist collaborators if chosen as the winner or finalist will receive a single $25,000 prize or $2,500 honorarium respectively, equally divided among group members.
The selection process occurs in three phases. First, jurors review applicants' submissions independently and select approximately 40 semi-finalists based on five digital images or up to ten minutes of time-based work and a resume. Second, semi-finalists submit an expanded submission of up to 30 images or time-based works and a description of fellowship use. Jurors convene to select approximately six to eight finalists for exhibition and final review. Third, finalists' work is exhibited at The Walters Art Museum, and on Saturday, July 13, 2013, jurors meet with each artist for up to 30 minutes for a final interview. The award is announced that evening at the award reception.
Applications are accepted through www.callforentry.org. Artists should create an artist profile, upload images or video, and apply for the 2013 Sondheim Prize while paying the $30 application fee. For time-based works submitted on DVD, video files should be in .mov or Quicktime format and no larger than 250MB. DVDs should be sent to: Sondheim Prize, Attention: Kim Domanski, Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts, 10 East Baltimore Street, 10th Floor, Baltimore, MD 21202 by the application deadline of January 7, 2013. Semi-finalists will be announced February 19, 2013; finalists announced April 16, 2013. The WAM exhibition runs June 29 through August 11, 2013.
