About This Call
The David Brower Center, a nonprofit in Berkeley dedicated to environmental and social action, hosts the Hazel Wolf Gallery. The Center's second annual juried exhibition, titled "Congregating," invites Bay Area artists to explore issues around physical gathering places and their significance in an increasingly remote world. The exhibition will examine how community spaces—from theaters and museums to farmers markets and street festivals—remain relevant for political, social, and communal engagement.
Artwork specifications: Wall-mounted objects must be 24" to 72" wide and no more than 12" deep. Video submissions will be displayed on wall-mounted monitors and may be looped with other artists' work; sound requires headphones. Temporary art performances or happenings may be proposed for limited-time event programming. Existing works are preferred except for performances or happenings. All media will be considered as long as objects are wall-mounted for the exhibition duration.
Submission materials include a maximum of 3 artwork submissions per artist (images, video files, or proposed temporary events), a combined maximum 1000-character statement explaining each work's relevance to the theme, an artist biography (maximum 1000 characters), and a resume or CV (maximum 2 pages). Jurors include René de Guzman (senior curator, Oakland Museum of California), Cheryl Haines (director, Haines Gallery), Ann Hatch (philanthropist and founder of The Workshop Residence), and Amy Tobin (Executive Director, David Brower Center).
