About This Call
The U.S. Forest Service invites Washington state artists to participate in a juried competition by submitting original art pieces that commemorate the event's theme: Sharing Washington's Good Nature. Participants will compete for the honor of being named the 2013 Capitol Christmas Tree official artist and have their art permanently exhibited in "The Tree Gallery" adjacent to the office of the Chief of the Forest Service.
Themes can include (but are not limited to): natural scenic beauty and/or depictions of the national Christmas tree; outdoor recreation; the relationship between people and the environment; current forestry issues; the contradictory themes of beauty amidst destruction and power versus fragility. Any artistic style is welcome and any medium may be used (acrylics, oil, water-color, textile, metals, photography, stained glass, etc.). Finished artwork should be between 25–35 inches high by 20–30 inches wide and must be designed to hang on a wall. Submissions should include 1–6 images.
Three eligibility categories are available: Professional ($20 entry fee, open to all artists 18+), Emerging ($15 entry fee, open to all artists 18+), and Youth (ages 5–18). A panel of jurors from Washington state will review submissions and select winners. The Sharing Washington's Good Nature Award includes a $1,000 grand prize, official image for the 2013 Capitol Christmas Tree, exhibition in the Chief of the Forest Service's office for one year, exhibition in the National Capitol Christmas Tree permanent collection, and recognition on the 2013 Capitol Christmas Tree website. Professional and Emerging winners each receive $500 prizes with website recognition. The Youth winner receives a $200 prize with website recognition. The Professional winner also receives recognition at the Chief of the Forest Service's reception immediately before the tree lighting ceremony at the Capitol.
