About This Call
The Beaverton Arts Commission seeks to place two sculptural works of human scale in prominent outdoor locations to enliven civic spaces. The public art program was established in 1985 and has developed a new master plan with goals of making public art more visible, engaging and accessible.
Artwork must be durable and free of precious or fragile materials, suitable to outdoor settings with pedestrian, skateboard and bicycle traffic, and reasonably vandal-resistant. The work should be pedestrian scale with a base for attaching to concrete not exceeding 25 square feet (5' x 5') and should not pose a tripping hazard. Artwork should be in keeping with the Public Art Master Plan values and welcoming to Beaverton's diverse population. There is particular interest in sculpture expressing movement and elegance, though kinetic work is not required.
Two sites are available: Lombard Plaza at SW Lombard and SW Broadway, an active transportation hub where larger scale, bold work would be most effective (approximately 70 sq. feet available); and Progress Ridge in southwest Beaverton, a new park overlooking Progress Lake with an existing concrete water feature that could be incorporated into placement or alternative paved area for installation. Compensation is $2000 for a 24-month rental fee plus up to $1000 for transportation, base, installation, decommissioning, removal and commercial general liability insurance per sculpture (total budget not to exceed $3000 per sculpture). Installation is September 2012 with de-installation September 2014. Eligibility is open to professional artists or artist teams living or working in Oregon, Washington or Idaho. Applications must include an artist's statement (not exceeding 1000 characters), up to 10 digital images (1920 x 1920 pixels), and a current resume (not exceeding 2 pages per artist). There is no application fee. Selection criteria include artistic excellence, suitability for site, and durability, maintenance and safety concerns.
