About This Call
The Napa ARTwalk program invites artists to exhibit temporary public art in Downtown Napa. The program aims to enhance the public environment, promote public art understanding and enjoyment, preserve and enrich Napa's cultural environment, and stimulate the downtown economy through increased pedestrian activity.
Artworks will remain on view for approximately twenty-four months. Community members and visitors may vote to select one artwork for a People's Choice Award, to be announced in spring 2015. The winner receives a complimentary two-night getaway in Napa. Printed and downloadable brochures with a map of artwork locations enable self-guided viewing. Exhibition hours are daily between sunrise and sunset, with many artworks indirectly illuminated at night. The program sponsor will collect a 10% commission on all sales resulting from the exhibit, used to advance the Napa ARTwalk program.
Up to fifteen locations along two primary pedestrian corridors in downtown Napa have been selected for artwork placement. All sites are within walking distance of one another, located along main pedestrian walkways, plazas and a park. Eight sites are in close proximity to the Napa River; seven are on major shopping and dining corridors. Each site has a previously installed concrete pad in one of three sizes: Large (18" high x 60" long x 60" wide), Medium (18" high x 48" long x 48" wide), or Small (6" high x 29.5" long x 17.5" wide). Artwork footprints must be smaller than pad dimensions with at least a 6" wide border of clear space. Any projections beyond the pad perimeter must occur higher than 7 feet from the ground. All artworks must securely attach to concrete pads and weigh no more than 2000 pounds.
The theme "Momentum: Art That Moves (Us)" highlights innovative artworks that are kinetic or imply or celebrate motion. Artworks must require no electrical power; activating sculptures using green technologies is encouraged. Only completed artworks are eligible; conceptual proposals will not be considered.
Applicants must currently live or work in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon or Washington and be at least 18 years of age. Napa ARTwalk Jurors and their immediate family members are ineligible. Each selected artist will receive an Artist Honorarium of $1,500.00 ($750.00 upon artwork delivery, $750.00 upon artwork pick-up) to assist with transportation, travel and other expenses.
Artists are responsible for delivering and installing artwork in early to mid-October 2011 by appointment. The City of Napa will provide staff for installation assistance and equipment if needed. Artists must provide any required hardware and remove all packing and crating materials prior to installation. Artists are responsible for picking up artwork within 30 days of the exhibition's closing date. Selected artists must enter into an agreement with the City of Napa. Artworks will be insured by the City of Napa up to the stated estimated insured value (maximum $75,000 per artwork) while exhibited or stored by the City. This insurance excludes damage from shipping, faulty construction, or installation or removal. Artworks must be structurally safe for the general public, including children, with moving parts that cannot cause injury and securely fastened components. Artworks must be maintenance-free for the exhibition period. If occasional cleaning or maintenance is required, the artist must keep the artwork in good aesthetic and operating condition. Beyond regularly-scheduled maintenance by the artist, if the City determines maintenance is needed, the artist or representative must tend to the artwork within two weeks of receiving notice.
