About This Call

The Art in Public Places (AIPP) program seeks to diversify New Mexico's public art collection by purchasing high-caliber existing artwork from distinguished artists in the region. This competition is open to professional artists who are residents of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Texas, and Oklahoma. Galleries located in these states may submit qualifications on behalf of represented artists, regardless of residency.

Artwork will be purchased for publicly accessible buildings throughout New Mexico, including amphitheaters, animal shelters, community centers, courthouses, educational institutions, fire stations, healthcare facilities, recreation complexes, rest areas, and senior centers. Purchase contracts range from $15,000 to $40,000, all inclusive. A series may consist of no more than 3 pieces with a $15,000 minimum per piece or series. The all-inclusive price covers materials, labor, insurance, taxes, commissions, fees, delivery, travel, museum quality framing under Plexiglas, security-hanger installation, pedestals for 3-dimensional works, Plexiglas bonnets for small 3-dimensional works, project plaques, and professional documentation.

Applicants must submit an artist's statement or letter of interest, a current resume or curriculum vitae, and three images of previously completed work available for purchase created within the past ten years (1999-2009). Artwork must be durable, permanent, low-maintenance, and in compliance with ADA guidelines. Selection criteria include professional qualifications, established exhibition record, minimum ten years of professional work experience, developed and consistent style, and artistic merit. A Submission Review Committee will score applications, and Regional Buying Committees will select artwork for their facilities. Artwork included in the final pool is not a guarantee of sale. If a submitted piece is sold through another venue, the artist must notify New Mexico Arts immediately. Artwork installed must be the same piece selected; substitutions and price fluctuations are not allowed after the submission deadline. Payment is made upon completion of contract terms and site verification. Contact Ben Owen at 505-827-6490 or [email protected] with questions.
