About This Call

The San Francisco Arts Commission invites artists to apply for the 2009 Bay Area Artists Registry. This registry will be used to select artists for public art opportunities associated with the construction of new civic buildings, parks and playgrounds as well as transportation and streetscape improvement projects. The Arts Commission seeks artists working in a variety of media and artistic approaches, especially those interested in having their design concepts translated into durable and easily maintained materials such as metal, concrete, glass, stone, ceramic tile, and light. Some projects may offer opportunities for artists to work as part of a design team with the project architect/designer.

Eligibility is open to professional, practicing artists residing in the nine San Francisco Bay Area counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma. Previous public art experience is not required. Public art will be commissioned at various locations throughout San Francisco, including Recreation and Parks sites (Chinese Recreation Center, McCoppin Square, Mission Playground, Sunset Playground, Fulton Playground, Palega Recreation Center, Cayuga Playground, and Guy Place/Rincon Hill Pocket Park), streetscape sites (Leland Avenue, Valencia Street, and up to three sites along Upper Market Street), and North Beach Library. Artwork budgets range from $30,000 to $200,000.

Applications must be submitted online via CaFÉ with 10 images maximum. There is no application fee. Artist teams must submit one application and are limited to 10 images total. The Arts Commission Public Art staff will screen applicants to establish a list of qualified candidates for each project. Selected finalists will receive an honorarium for attending an orientation meeting and preparing and presenting a proposal. The selection panel will interview artists and review public comments, proposals, and references before making recommendations to the Arts Commission for approval. The 2009 Bay Area Artists Registry will be terminated as of March 2010.
