About This Call
Portland Open Studios is a juried studio tour of approximately 100 artists in the Portland metro area, now in its 19th year. The tour is a ticketed event where attendees may purchase a printed Tour Guide, a Mobile app, or be personally invited by artists to their studios. It is an important and anticipated annual arts event that attracts visitors from the community and beyond.
Artists must open their studios and demonstrate their working methods during all hours of both weekends (October 14-15 and 21-22, 2017, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Studios are open to residents of Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington Counties. A studio is any workspace where the artist is permitted to open to the public and can demonstrate their working methods, including living rooms and garages. Artists must have an educational element, such as documentation of methods or demonstrations of technical and creative processes. The opportunity is open to all visual media except film.
Applications require 3 artwork images (JPEG format, minimum 1920 pixels on longest side, 72 ppi, 5 MB maximum) and optionally 1 "at work" image showing the artist in their studio or creative process. Three jurors from Portland's arts community score each applicant's artwork images. The percentage of previous participants admitted will not exceed 65% of total participants. Entry fee is $40. Upon acceptance, a participation fee of $250 is collected (funding advertising and operating costs), plus an optional $50 volunteer opt-out fee. Artists 20-30 years old may apply for the Kimberly Gales Emerging Artist Scholarship, which waives the participation fee and includes a $100 stipend. Selected artists receive artwork and contact information published in a full-color Tour Guide and iPhone/Android apps, a dedicated website page with three images and artist statement, 5 free Tour Guides and studio signs, minimum two free workshops, blog announcements from April 2017 through March 2018, and a free ad for art classes in the tour guide.
