About This Call

Art on the Streets celebrates the power of art in public places, turning the streets of Downtown Colorado Springs into a yearlong outdoor sculpture gallery. More than 200 artworks have been exhibited downtown since the program began in 1999, and the district is home to more than 50 permanent works, many of which have been purchased through Art on the Streets.

Up to 12 artists will be selected to exhibit. Selected artists each receive a $1,250 honorarium, two nights of complimentary lodging in Colorado Springs (one for installation and one for the Launch Party), and are eligible for additional awards: $10,000 Juror Award, $1,000 Honorable Mention, and $1,000 People's Choice Award. Accepted pieces will also be considered for a second year of display in Manitou Springs through a partnership with the Manitou Springs Arts Council, which offers select artists an additional one-year lease agreement with a $500 stipend and two nights of lodging.

Artists should submit 1-3 images. Entry fee is $25. Selected artwork will be exhibited throughout the 40-square block downtown district. Artists are encouraged to consider Colorado weather conditions (extreme sun, strong winds, freezing/moisture, and temperature fluctuations) and public accessibility. While sculpture dominates submissions, other types of public art suitable for outdoor experience are encouraged, including interactive and multimedia works. Two special sites are available: the Transit Gallery at the Downtown Transit Center (with specific pedestal dimensions and preference for interactive components) and the City Administration Building (with preference for works embodying Olympic and Paralympic ideals). Installation occurs May 29-June 9, 2017, with exhibit opening June 15, 2017, and closing May 2018. Artists will be notified of acceptance by March 14, 2017.
