About This Call
The Durbin Gallery, located in the Kennedy Art Center at Birmingham-Southern College, announces a spring 2020 exhibition considering the centennial ratification of the 19th amendment, which barred states from denying voting rights based on gender. Self-identified women artists whose practices consider the connections between the legacy and pursuit of gender equity, political memory, intersectional feminist histories, organized and grassroots protest, social change, and voter access/suppression are of interest. Artists and cultural producers exploring the marginalization of and discrimination against women of color in relation to suffrage are especially encouraged to apply.
The exhibition will run from March 6th through March 26th, 2020 and will be guest curated by Lindsey O'Connor. All media will be considered, including but not limited to 2D, 3D, sound, video, performance, installation, time-based, research-based, speculative projects, and public programs. Submissions of existing works and proposals for new projects are welcome. All submissions will be reviewed in the order they are received by Birmingham-Southern studio art faculty and the guest curator.
Submissions must include images of the work or proposal description, details of the work including material, dimensions, and title, a brief artist's statement, and CV/résumé of the artist. Maximum 5 entries per applicant (must be exact work that is available). Images must be JPG only, under 5 MB. For video submissions, please include video stills as images and an external link to the video in the image description (Vimeo, YouTube, or direct website links only). Provide a description for each entry specifying how the work is intended to be displayed. Entry fee is $25. Open to all USA-based artists. Deadline for submissions: Friday, November 22nd. Notification of acceptance: Friday, December 20th. Arrival of accepted works: Friday, February 21st. Works can be hand-delivered or shipped; however, Durbin Gallery is unable to cover costs associated with shipping or return. Works available for pick up: Monday, March 30th.
