About This Call

MidPen Housing is seeking proposals to create a public art installation on a prominent central area in front of the 1990 & 2000 S. Delaware St. buildings in San Mateo. This location will be highly visible to pedestrian and vehicular traffic along Delaware St. The organization is most interested in commissioning a work of art that is meaningful in the context of its time and place and resonates with the surrounding community. Kinetic or solar-powered elements are welcome, and a variety of mediums and techniques are acceptable provided the artwork is durable, weather and vandal resistant.

The 1990 & 2000 S. Delaware St. complex is a pedestrian-friendly community providing rental homes for working families and individuals with easy access to groceries, retail and public transportation. The complex consists of two 60-unit buildings. Artists from the Bay Area region are preferable, though out-of-state applications may be considered.

Submittal deadline is April 10, 2015. Artists must submit artist experience with photos of completed projects, an installation proposal with written explanation and at least one image illustrating the concept, a proposed schedule, and an itemized budget. The total budget range for the artwork is approximately $70,000-$100,000, including installation. Dimensions of the potential art area are: Top 10' x 26', Front wall 12' x 6', Ground 12' x 6'. The jury will choose up to three artists to interview before arriving at a final decision. For questions, contact Helen Tong-Ishikawa at 650-356-2968 or Melissa Smedley at 831-737-5360.
