About This Call
The City of Greeley is seeking one or more artists to design and create artwork for the 16th Street renovation project, a four-block corridor between 7th and 11th Avenues. The project aims to improve pedestrian safety and create a visually appealing, walkable environment that serves as a destination and interface between the University of Northern Colorado campus and adjacent neighborhoods. The primary focus is on the two blocks from 8th to 10th Avenues, which will include two mini roundabouts, parking within the center median, and complementary landscaping. Artwork that contributes to placemaking and reinforces the corridor as a destination will be prioritized.
The total art project budget is $85,000, divided into two phases. Phase I (design) provides $25,000 for the selected artist to work as an artwork design consultant in 2023, paid in installments. The artist must participate in monthly progress meetings with the design team and develop three or four preliminary designs, with one selected for final detailed design including stamped engineering plans. The final design must be completed by November 2023. Phase II (fabrication/installation) provides up to $60,000 for artwork creation and installation, with projected completion between June and December 2024.
Artwork must be safe for humans and animals, withstand Colorado's weather extremes, require minimal maintenance, and have an expected lifespan of 20-30 years. All media types are acceptable provided they are durable, industrial grade, and appropriate to the corridor. Artwork must feature diverse themes acceptable to a broad audience, cannot include logos or copyrighted images, and must not appear to invite climbing or vandalism. The artist shall not sell full-size reproductions of the design to any public entity within 100 miles of Greeley. Submissions must include 6 images of work samples. Selected artist(s) will be notified by March 26, 2023.
