About This Call
Art on the Streets celebrates the power of art in public places, turning the streets of Downtown Colorado Springs into a yearlong outdoor sculpture gallery. Up to 12 artists will be chosen to exhibit their work throughout the 40-square-block downtown district.
Selected artists each receive a $1,000 honorarium, plus two nights of complimentary lodging in Colorado Springs—one for installation and one to attend the exhibition's Opening Ceremony. All selected artists are eligible for additional awards: a Juror Award of $10,000 and a People's Choice Award of $1,000. Selected artwork will be exhibited for approximately 11 months, from June 2014 through May 2015.
Artists may submit one work per application with up to three images. A suggested minimum dimension of 3 feet is recommended for sculpture, scaled to outdoor spaces. Artists should consider that work will be exhibited outdoors and accessible to the public. Multiple proposals may be submitted through separate applications at a discounted fee of $10 per application after the first $25 fee. Entry fee is $25, payable by VISA or MASTERCARD at submission. Selected artists are chosen through a jury process in which artistic quality serves as the primary criteria. Secondary criteria include installation, maintenance and safety concerns, and diversity of works. While sculpture tends to dominate entries, other types of public art suitable for outdoor experience are encouraged, including interactive, temporary, and multimedia works. The lead juror is Blake Milteer, Museum Director and Chief Curator for the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, joined by up to two additional jurors including artist and community representatives knowledgeable in sculpture and public art.
All submissions must include full contact information, a narrative description of the artwork (title, medium, dimensions in feet, price), a current professional resume, a two-paragraph maximum artist's statement, and a detailed installation plan. Each selected artist bears responsibility for installation of their work, though reasonable installation expenses are covered by Art on the Streets, including additional labor and equipment needs in some cases. Installation occurs from mid-May through mid-June, prior to the exhibit's Opening Ceremony in June 2014. A $1,000 honorarium will be awarded to each artist upon receipt of a W9 Taxpayer Identification Form.
