About This Call
Portland Open Studios is a juried studio tour of 100 artists in the Portland metro area, providing a unique opportunity for artists to open their studios to the public. Now in its 14th year, it is an important and anticipated annual arts event. The tour is a ticketed event attracting visitors from the community and beyond. Attendees may purchase a printed Tour Guide, iPhone app, or be personally invited by artists to their studios.
The event is open to all visual media except film. Artists are required to open their studio and demonstrate their working methods during both weekend dates (October 13, 14, 20, 21, with studios open 10-5). Eligibility is limited to residents of Portland, Tigard, Beaverton, Aloha, Milwaukie, Oak Grove, Gladstone, Happy Valley, Lake Oswego, West Linn, and Tualatin. Entry fee is $35. Upon acceptance, a participation fee of $150 is collected, with an optional volunteer opt-out fee of $175. Applicants must submit 3-6 images for jury review. Three jurors from Portland's arts community view and score each applicant's submitted images to determine participation.
Participating artists receive artwork published in a full-color Tour Guide with contact information, a dedicated website page featuring three images, website link and artist statement, 5 free Tour Guides and studio signs, and two free workshops providing tour information and professional tips. Artists may also sell work directly to the public. The Kimberly Gales Emerging Artist Scholarship is available for artists ages 20-30, providing all fees waived and a $100 stipend. Selection notification occurs April 1, with evening workshops on May 14 and July 31.
