12th Mountain Maryland Plein Air Competition & Exhibition

The 12th Mountain Maryland Plein Air Competition & Exhibition takes place June 12-17, 2023, in Cumberland, MD. A total of 30 artists will be selected to participate. The entry fee is $40.00 and includes submission of three digital images representing the applicant's plein air body of work, along with a brief artist statement. Selected artists must arrive Monday, June 12, 2023, and remain through Saturday, June 17, 2023, for required events including Artist Orientation (Monday morning), Welcome Event (Tuesday evening), Reveal Evening (Friday evening), and Quickdraw (Saturday morning).

Artists will have time to paint daily through Thursday, June 15, 2023. All paintings completed during the week will be turned in and installed for the Reveal Evening on Friday, June 16, 2023. Work may be collected at 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 17, 2023. Work produced during the event may not exceed 30" in width, including frame. Artists are responsible for completing, framing, and preparing artwork for installation onsite. The Allegany Arts Council charges a 35% commission on artwork sold during the event, with all sales handled directly through the sponsoring organization. Artwork will be insured for 65% of its retail value during the exhibition. Artists are responsible for all shipping, insurance, and related costs.

Prizes include: Best of Show ($3,500), First Place ($2,500), Second Place ($1,500), Third Place ($1,000), Juror's Award of Merit ($700), Best Use of Light ($700), Best Architectural ($700), and Artists' Choice ($500). Quickdraw prizes include Juried First Place ($1,000), Juried Second Place ($500), Juried Third Place ($250), Community Artist Award ($100), and Student Artist Award ($50). The juror is Charlie Hunter, a nationally recognized painter. Selected artists will be notified on Thursday, March 9, 2023.
