Reiner Viera Diaz
Contemporary painter based in Canada exploring identity, transformation, and hybrid human-animal imagery.
Artist Statement
My work explores the human condition through symbolic transformation. The human figure fragments, merges with animals, objects, and other forms, or alters its nature to make visible what cannot always be expressed through appearance: impulses, conflicts, desires, trauma, power relations, vulnerability, survival, and moral contradictions.
Animals do not appear as fantastic or decorative elements. Their identities and attributes function as psychological and symbolic extensions of the human being. Through hybridization, altered anatomy, and symbolic contradiction, I reveal what lies beneath appearances: what a character presents, what they truly are, and what they attempt to conceal.
My figures do not transform for fantasy. Their bodies reveal a second nature — the hidden tensions, desires, fears, and contradictions that their human appearance alone cannot fully express. My visual language combines figurative detail with layered, fragmented compositions in which transparent passages, colour, and shifting forms create spaces that move between physical reality and psychological experience. In my work, appearance is never sufficient.
