embodied abstractions and unstable objects

Artist Statement

As both a visual artist and psychotherapist of 20 years, my work is rooted within the landscape of existential and feminist psychology, and it regularly explores themes of embodiment, memory, ritual, and transformation. Each of these seemingly separate disciplines each informs and reinforces the other, as I’m repeatedly drawn to images, colors, and materials that feel emotionally charged and a little lived-in. Across my creative and professional practices, I return to fragility, endurance, connection, and the ways ordinary moments can acquire unexpected emotional or spiritual weight.

I usually begin by planning a work’s underlying structure and composition, then build it layer by layer, responding to what emerges. Mixed media allows me to create surfaces that feel textured, imperfect, physical, and alive. I’m particularly interested in elucidating the tension between structure and atmosphere, and in making work that feels both intimate and slightly mythic. Color is central to that process; I often use saturated, jewel-toned palettes to evoke reverence, unease, tenderness, or wonder.

My practice is also organized around the physical realities of disability. Disabled artists frequently navigate symptoms and limitations that vary unpredictably over time. For me, finite physical and mental energy, chronic pain, and mobility impairment shape the scale of my work, the materials I choose, the arrangement of my workspace, the assistance and consultation I need to complete projects safely, and the rhythm of my making. I often work in shorter intervals and develop processes that can be paused, resumed, or adapted as my body requires. I do not consider these needs separate from the work or limitations that must be concealed. These accommodations—and the accumulated decisions they require—are a significant aspect of my work’s method and meaning: the need to pace, improvise, rest, and begin again becomes embedded in its structure and layered surfaces. This feels important because modern cultural ideas about seriousness, worthiness, and productivity often presume an endlessly available, non-disabled body. I want my practice to acknowledge adaptation itself as a form of knowledge, invention, and authorship.

Across my work, I return to mortality, disability, memory, the body, and our complicated relationships with the natural and digital worlds. I’m interested in the strange beauty that emerges when grief, humor, desire, and tenderness are allowed to coexist within the same space. Ultimately, I make art to explore the seismic and unstable boundaries between the body and its surroundings, the individual and the collective, and the everyday and the sacred. Through layered surfaces, symbolic imagery, and emotionally charged color, I hope to create work that feels contemplative, unsettled, and alive.
