Connie Lee Lynch

Crochet Designer & Fiber Artist

Artist Statement

I am a fiber artist, certified crochet instructor, and crochet designer currently based in Fort Benning, Georgia. As a military veteran, spouse, and mother, I relocate with my family every few years. This transient lifestyle deeply shapes my creative practice, teaching me to look closely for local inspiration and a sense of place with every changing landscape, ranging from the Mojave Desert to the Hawaiian islands.

My background heavily influences the narrative and technical side of my practice. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a Craft Yarn Council teaching certification. Beyond my gallery work, my original crochet designs have been published in both spinning and crochet magazines, including Spin Off, PLY Magazine, Moorit, and Interweave Crochet.

My fine art is an immersive exploration of color and texture created primarily through crocheted fabrics. Moving frequently has taught me to look closely at the world around me and capture fleeting moments of beauty, whether that is a sweeping desert horizon or a single weed resiliently blooming in a sidewalk crack. Every creation serves as a permanent, visual narrative of these experiences.

In the studio, my practice balances crochet design with abstract fiber art. Each tapestry uses the same foundational stitch pattern to create rectangular pieces of fabric using my own handspun yarn, which I mount onto wood panels using escutcheon pins. Because I do not dye my own fiber, my process relies heavily on curation. I carefully source wool and other fibers from small family farms and independent dyers when possible, and then blend and spin those colors to build my own custom palettes. I treat the crochet hook like a pen or paintbrush, playing with color transitions, stitch textures, and the tension between organic and rigid lines.

Ultimately, color is the central pillar of everything I make. My goal is to create works that invite viewers to slow down, immerse themselves in shifting or contrasting colors, and find joy in a simple moment. By bringing a familiar, traditional handcraft into contemporary gallery spaces, my work encourages people to pause, connect with the colors and textures before them, and celebrate the quiet wonder found within our shared experiences.
