Artist Statement
Being a seasoned surgeon and healthcare professional, I picked up a brush rather than a scalpel. I read a face for what it cannot hide. My training taught me to read micro-expressions, the involuntary movements that betray what a person truly feels. I bring that same gaze to paper, and every portrait I draw is built on that reading.
I record history in black ink — 361 portraits and counting — drawn as events unfold: leaders, dissidents, moments that bend the arc of our time. Each portrait is drawn on toned or rice paper, the subject's name hand-lettered vertically down the edge, dated the day it happened. I do not chase likeness alone. A photograph captures a face; I try to catch the person peering through the eyes — the calculation, the grief, the defiance that the news camera misses.
My subjects are the people shaping this moment, from Nobel laureates to strongmen, from protest lines to senate hearings. I draw them fast, while the event is still warm, because history understood late becomes history misunderstood. Every piece is finished with my red JC seal, the surgeon's mark that the work is complete.
People pass, photos fade, and art endures. A headline is forgotten by morning; an ink portrait holds its subject still long enough for us to really look. That is what I offer: not illustration, but witness — a surgeon's eye turned on the human story, one face at a time.
