Artist Statement

Marc S. Herring is an American painter, sculptor, and visual arts educator whose work explores memory, history, nostalgia, time, and the emotional significance carried by ordinary objects.
Working primarily in oils, Herring creates intimate, atmospheric compositions characterized by dramatic lighting, restrained earth tones, realistic textures, and carefully constructed arrangements. Military artifacts, books, watches, flags, personal belongings, and commonplace objects become vessels for stories of longing, sacrifice, absence, home, and the passage of time.
His work is rooted in the belief that ordinary objects can preserve extraordinary personal and collective histories. Through carefully constructed compositions, Herring seeks to give physical form to memories that might otherwise fade.
