Artist Statement

I am a Scottish born, Western North Carolina–based metal sculptor whose artistic journey began with a career in materials engineering and fabrication. In 2012, I established Luckenbooth Studios to fulfill a long-held ambition to explore the creative and artistic potential of materials, cultures, and environments.

My work draws inspiration from the natural world, poetry, science, engineering, and the everyday experiences of life. I create contemporary and abstract sculptures that interpret human activity, natural forms, and ideas through shape, structure, texture, and material. Metal is central to my practice, but I enjoy experimenting with different materials and techniques to discover unexpected possibilities.

Having lived, worked, and travelled extensively in the Netherlands, Malaysia, the UK, and the USA, I have encountered diverse cultures, landscapes, and ecosystems. These experiences continue to influence how I see and interpret the world, bringing cultural and ecological perspectives into my work.

Humour is an important element of my practice. I often use it to introduce playfulness, provoke curiosity, or encourage the viewer to look at familiar subjects from a different perspective.

Through sculpture, I bring together my engineering experience and creative curiosity, transforming materials and ideas into works that invite engagement, reflection, and, occasionally, a smile.
