Artist Statement

My practice explores the meeting point of Chinese ink traditions and contemporary color-based painting. Since 2007, I have developed a personal visual language that I call Neo-Color Ink Painting, working primarily with ink and water-based pigments on raw xuan paper, as well as marker and mixed media on canvas and linen.

My process moves between spontaneity and control. Poured color, flowing water, and diffused ink introduce unpredictable forms, while layered marks, rhythmic lines, and deliberate tonal adjustments gradually establish structure. I describe this relationship as “color and ink generating one another.” Within the subtle territory between brightness and darkness, I use gray and transitional color to create atmosphere, depth, and psychological space.

Nature is not simply a subject in my work, but a living system of transformation. Mountains, clouds, water, plants, and animals emerge and dissolve within fields of color, reflecting cycles of growth, memory, movement, and renewal. Drawing from both Eastern philosophy and my experience of living in California, I seek to create landscapes that are neither purely observed nor imagined, but spaces in which the visible world and inner perception meet.

Through this work, I hope to extend the expressive possibilities of ink painting while creating a contemporary dialogue among material, color, nature, and cultural experience.
