Artist Statement

As an artist, I observe ordinary scenes in nature or in everyday things around me. I paint from my photos, but also from life in my studio or occasional Pleinair. On almost every ride or walk, something inspires me to take a photo for later use. While using a photo for inspiration, I try to depict the memory I had at first sight. I look for the light and detail that gave the scene or object a sense of presence and beauty. I start with an edited sketch on the canvas, ensuring the composition works and then fill in the blocks of color. Layers of paint will follow, adding more detail until I feel no more can be added. At that point, I let the painting sit awhile before I declare it finished.
