Artist Statement
I spent a good part of my life at the Channel Islands. I come from a family of boat captains with an 85-foot trawler. While the family was fishing and diving, I was painting.
My paintings are loose, expressive, and rich in color. I am drawn to ordinary moments that carry a strong sense of place: Ventura streets, harbors, trains, working landscapes, horses, ocean light, surfers, and the Channel Islands. I am less interested in recording every detail than in capturing the atmosphere—the movement, temperature, light, and feeling of being there.
I am a self-taught artist and have spent much of my life being artsy -- trusting my own instincts. I have worked as a stained-glass artist, bookseller, publisher, business owner, and watercolorist. Those experiences taught me to flow like the water. I am earthy by nature; I notice beauty everywhere.
My personality is reflected in my work. I am private, quietly excited when I paint, and not especially interested in following trends. I prefer bold color to hesitation, intermingling pigments to perfection, and honest brushwork to something overly controlled. I approach painting with curiosity and a sense of adventure, allowing the water and pigment to participate in the process.
Each painting is my response to a place or moment that made me stop and look twice. My hope is that the viewer feels that same recognition—a familiar street, a changing sky, a quiet animal, or a flash of California light—and finds something personal within it.
