Nicole Schleckman

Artist Statement

Nicole Schleckman is an interdisciplinary artist who grew up on the west side of Cleveland, Ohio. In the summer of 2020 she hand sewed a banner that was displayed on the fence of the White House and was featured in a campaign video for Biden for Change. That same year she participated in the tinypricksproject, a collaborative project using embroidery to create and amass an archive of embroidered political quotes.

Her previous work includes a series of personal zines she wrote and self-published in the late 90s/early 2000s as part of the indie/diy/riot grrrl/punk movement.

Over the last few years her work has shifted to ceramic sculptures, most recently using her handbuilding skills to create a series of eclectic homes with lights shining through the windows and illuminating the small gestures made by their occupants. These gestures signal some of the ways one can “be the light” for others; by reflecting love, kindness, and celebrating our diversity with the hope of positively impacting those around us.

Her work is heavily influenced by social justice and finding commonality in art, provoking conversation, and inspiring change.
