Dhani Marin

Artist Statement

Dhani Marin was born in Berkeley. First published at age 12, their art and writing have been featured in both print and digital media. The very first art contest Dhani won was in third grade. The prize: an Alice Cooper album which Dhani’s parents hated. Dhani has performed poetry and performance art at such venues as KPFA radio, the On Broadway and The Old Spaghetti Factory in North Beach where the old stalwarts like Jack Hirschmann and Gregory Corso were not too happy with the new interloper and attempted to throw a wine bottle at their act, “The Autistics.” The hecklers warmed to Dhani though, and before long even Burroughs grudgingly tolerated the new performance art style, which incorporated Eno-esque synthesizer stylings, with the spoken word and Readymade style art pieces. At this juncture Dhani was studying classical viola and was a member of Marin Youth Symphony, Young People’s Symphony in Berkeley and other youth symphonies. After an embarrassing Masterclass with a famous violist on stage at an international viola conference at the New England Conservatory of Music, Dhani decided life as a symphony violist was not for them. Dhani continued create 2D art and published and sold pieces, once trading one for a used car. After a long detour as a structure firefighter/EMT, a stint in the USAF, and other non-art related activities, Dhani has finally decided to stop wasting time and make up for lost time by storming the local art scene and creating new art, essentially 24/7. Dhani is planning to attend a local university to complete a degree in Studio Art.
