Artist Statement

My photographic work is rooted in sustained, attentive observation of animals in their natural environments. Rather than staging scenes or returning repeatedly to known subjects, I work through exploration -- moving through unfamiliar terrain, studying species behavior and habitat in advance, then responding to what unfolds. The images emerge from that balance of preparation and presence: informed enough to recognize a meaningful moment, and patient enough to let it arrive on its own terms.
What interests me most is how animals communicate meaning through posture, proximity, and response. Some photographs are quiet -- an animal resting, moving through water, occupying space with composure. Others involve tension or confrontation: a mother bear rearing to protect her cubs, a brief encounter shaped by awareness and risk. Whether still or in motion, I look for the moment when an animal's inner state becomes visible -- when behavior reveals something about how a creature understands its world.
My work spans North America and Africa, though geography is secondary to a consistent way of seeing. I am drawn to understated interactions -- parents and young, animals at rest, brief exchanges of attention -- moments that are easily missed but deeply resonant. Whether in its quieter forms or its most overwhelming expressions, wildness consistently exceeds what imagination alone can construct.
Technically, I work exclusively with natural light and keep post-processing restrained, so that form, texture, and expression remain central. Finished works are produced as archival pigment prints on museum-quality materials, with careful attention to tonal consistency and longevity. The choice of paper and print method is made image by image, selected to support the particular character of each photograph rather than to impose a uniform aesthetic.
My aim is to create photographs that reflect informed, respectful observation -- images that allow moments of intensity or calm to stand on their own terms, without exaggeration or spectacle. I believe wildlife photography is most honest, and most affecting, when the distance between photographer and subject is held with care.
