A multidisciplinary artist of Romanian origin based in France, Laura Buruiana develops a singular artistic language at the intersection of music and painting. A solo cellist and teacher — praised by The New York Times for her virtuosity and by The Washington Post for her lyricism — she extends the expressive depth of her musical practice into the visual realm. Her work translates the invisible structures of sound into matter, exploring rhythm, resonance, and the physicality of gesture.

Winner of First Prize at the prestigious Young Concert Artists competition in New York and the Arturo Bonucci competition in Rome, Laura has performed in some of the world’s most renowned venues, including the Berlin Philharmonie, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Kennedy Center in Washington. This intimate understanding of sonic vibration informs her pictorial approach, where each gesture echoes the precision, tension, and release inherent to musical performance.

Her paintings are conceived as fields of forces rather than representations. Through layered textures, controlled drippings, and chromatic tensions, she creates compositions that evoke suspended states, inner balance, or moments of rupture. The surface becomes a site of transformation, where sound is no longer heard but perceived as a tactile and visual experience. In this sense, her practice is not a translation, but a transposition — a passage from the ephemeral to the material.

Her recent series, Resonance Field, explores these dynamics through a minimal yet powerful visual vocabulary. Large chromatic fields interact with structural elements and gestural traces, suggesting the persistence of vibration beyond the moment of impact. Silence, in her work, is never absence but a charged presence — dense, active, and deeply embodied.

Laura Buruiana’s rise on the contemporary art scene is marked by an active international exhibition schedule throughout 2025 and 2026. She has presented her work in major European art capitals, including Venice (ITS LIQUID), Paris (The Muisca Gallery, Le Marais), Milan (Divulgarti, Artemida Art Expo), Nantes (art3f), Graz (Art Expo Graz at Seifenfabrik), Munich (Art Muc Festival), Barcelona (Galerie Marzia), Marbella (Art World), and Madrid (Van Gogh Gallery). Her work has also been exhibited in New York in the group exhibition Interconnecting Lines. In Paris, she will participate in major fairs such as art3f at Porte de Versailles and Art Shopping at the Carrousel du Louvre.

Her works have been selected by international curators, including Flavio Scaloni (Galerie Lo Scalo) and Frederick de Souza (De Souza Gallery), as well as independent curators, and are featured in collections on Singulart.

Critical responses highlight the singularity of her approach. As Flavio Scaloni notes, “a remarkable tactile density that creates a dialogue between auditory resonance and visual matter — she does not simply paint, she composes.” Quentin Métayer (Perrotin) emphasizes “a deeply sensitive universe, where energy and spontaneity bring the material fully to life on the canvas.”

Whether holding the bow of her cello or the brush before her canvases, Laura Buruiana explores what she calls the “invisible score” of the world. Her work reveals the hidden structures of perception, transforming sound into image, gesture into presence, and silence into a resonant field.
