Artist Statement

Through the use of diverse hand building techniques, I craft pieces that serve as a reflection on the intense emotions accompanying the journey of aging. My work stems from an experience of grief when someone close to me moved away and did not keep in contact. This event triggered a long lasting wave of emotions that I was unsure how to deal with.
While these emotions are undeniably challenging to navigate, I've come to appreciate the significance of these hurdles as essential stepping stones for personal growth. They strengthen us, preparing us to confront new and more demanding situations in the future. As I process the emotions that inspire each piece, my body becomes a vessel, translating these emotions into physical forms. The physical act of sculpting, using my hands and the force of my movements, mirrors the emotional intensity embedded within each piece. Each curve and indentation in the clay captures not just a physical form but also encapsulates the emotional aspect that inspires its creation. The clay functions as a malleable canvas that records the journey it takes to create each piece. Once the piece is finished it becomes a living artifact of my emotional journey.
Each piece becomes a vessel for these emotions, enabling both myself and the audience to directly confront and coexist with these feelings while in the same space. Emotions can often be overwhelming and scary to confront. In a world filled with chaos, darkness, and negativity, I aspire for my art to be a beacon of joy, playfulness and humor. I believe that while we navigate the complexities of life, it’s important to acknowledge those emotions. Through my work, I hope to create a space where laughter and lightness can coexist with the deeper feelings we all encounter on our journey through life.
