Artist Statement
As a mixed media artist, my work is driven by themes of the mental and physical journey growing up with acne, and how childhood memories and human experiences, specifically societies expectations, can influence my art making. I use various forms of media from paint to yarn in order to express certain ideas within this theme, but the recurrent use of yarn is used as a form of therapy as well as to experiment with different textures that reference skin. I have also used mirrors as a painting surface in order to contrast the concept of “glass skin.” I approach each work by considering which theme I am focusing on and find what helps communicate the idea most successfully. The concept of societies expectations has come up more frequently in my recent works as I find that it pertains to the aspect of growing up with acne and how skin is meant to look a certain way. I am constantly exploring different materials and find how they best express my ideas with the most intention.
