Artist Statement

MEMORIES OF BIG BEND

Having lived in Texas for most of my life, I visited Big Bend National Park with my husband in 2024 during our honeymoon. Drawing from his experience, he guided me through trails and sights which inspired this art piece as a tribute to our time there.
?Memories of Big Bend? features fiber elements like cotton, rayon, and polyester from my fabric collection, as well as natural materials such as dried grasses, moss, cactus leaves. I collected the natural materials on walks near my home in San Antonio. The rocks and crushed granite elements added texture and variety to the artwork.
I incorporated the wool felting for the sun, cotton balls for clouds, cotton fibers for the sky and foreground, rayon scraps for mountains. Techniques used to create ?Memories of Big Bend? included freeform stitching, embroidery, and use of cotton batting, Texture Magic, and cotton embroidery floss for wildflowers and embellishments.
I hope you enjoy ?Memories of Big Bend.? I look forward to returning in springtime when the Bluebonnets are in bloom, though the basin area will be closed for renovations for two years.

This year I enjoyed working on my sculped piece of work for the Viriditas show From Fiber Artists of San Antonio, which reflects on Green and growth. I hope you will enjoy my art piece.
