Artist Statement

The overlooked, the habitual, and the seemingly ordinary details of life, upon closer examination, contain complex histories of culture, belonging, and displacement. As an artist of the South Asian diaspora based in the United States, my practice is deeply rooted in observation and a continual navigation of the tension between two distinct cultural landscapes. Within my work, the familiar becomes both anchor and question as motifs from Indian tradition sit alongside American vernaculars.

I frequently return to South Asian motifs, such as block-printed patterns or kolam designs, reimagining them in contemporary contexts. These symbols, once embedded in the fabric of everyday life, become portals into questions of authenticity, inheritance, and transformation.

Motherhood, gender, and domesticity play a crucial role in this exploration. By intertwining traditional motifs with the intimate gestures and rhythms of caregiving, I examine the simultaneous pull to honor tradition and the necessity to reshape it.

Through an assemblage of mark-making, rich textures, and varied mediums, I embrace these dualities of disconnection and belonging. My work asks what it means to safeguard a cultural inheritance while actively transforming it, and to inhabit two worlds while never fully belonging to either.
