Artist Statement

My work is rooted in a dialogue between ancient visual traditions and contemporary Caribbean life. Drawing from the cultural landscape of Trinidad and Tobago, I explore how inherited symbols, materials, and ritual practices continue to shape modern identity. The past is not distant or fixed; it exists alongside us, informing us how we see, create, and understand ourselves in the present.

Ancient cultures understood art as a vessel for memory, spirituality, and communal knowledge. In my practice, I refer to this sensibility using layered imagery, symbolic forms, and textural surfaces that echo archaeological marks, ancestral patterns, and sacred spaces. These elements are not meant as historical reconstructions, but as living fragments—reimagined to speak to contemporary experiences of displacement, resilience, and cultural continuity.

At the same time, my work responds to the realities of the modern world: globalization, postcolonial narratives, and the constant negotiation of identity within Caribbean society. Contemporary materials and visual languages are combined with traditional motifs to reflect the tension between preservation and transformation. This merging of ancient and modern reflects the Caribbean condition itself—where African, Indigenous, and European histories intersect and evolve.

Ultimately, my work seeks to bridge time, creating a visual conversation between what was and what is. By engaging in both ancient cultural memory and contemporary expression, I aim to challenge viewers to consider how history lives within the present, and how art can serve as a space for reconnection, reflection, and cultural affirmation.
