Nancy Overton

Artist Statement

I began calling myself a paper artist when I realized I spent many of my weekends at estate/garage sales looking for old sheet music, handwritten recipes and love letters, so that I could spend my week day studio time making pictures with those papers. Torn paper collage became my chosen medium for rendering my favorite subjects: birds, dogs, flowers, food and drink. My studio filled with many kinds and colors of papers: Japanese rice papers, Lokta papers from Nepal, recycled mail and newspapers, papers from the art store.

My love of paper jumped into three dimensions when I started making paper mache birds, and my collage papers became the wings of Bluebirds. Sometimes a Robin will sport a sheet music breast to convey its song, Humming birds, some shiny green paper I've saved from a Christmas gift wrap.

I am all about paper.

I am a graduate of The California Collage of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, Class of 1965.
