What are you imagining?

Artist Statement

I am JD Olexa, the Mad Scientist of Art. My practice is rooted in the belief that art is not simply the creation of an object, but the exploration of everything that makes its creation possible.

I approach each work as an investigation into the relationship between thought, material, technique, and experience. I am interested in the invisible structures beneath visible things: the preparation behind a movement, the discipline behind a skill, the accumulated decisions that shape a gesture, and the countless variables that transform an idea into something tangible.

My process is one of continuous experimentation. I combine learned techniques with improvisation, allowing materials to challenge my expectations and lead me toward discoveries I could not have planned. Painting, tattooing, music, sculpture, and installation are not separate disciplines in my practice, but different instruments for exploring the same fundamental question: what happens when we make our thinking visible?

I call this approach Tinkering as Art. It is a commitment to curiosity, to learning through doing, and to treating the process itself as a meaningful part of the finished work. I am less interested in reproducing what is already understood than in uncovering what remains hidden, overlooked, or waiting to be discovered.

My work invites viewers to look beyond the surface—to consider the systems, choices, and human effort that give form to what they see. Through this process, I seek to transform ordinary materials and familiar subjects into opportunities for deeper observation, questioning, and wonder.
