Artist Statement

I am a Cape Cod based artist and the creator of Ann Judge Design. My work has a bright, whimsical, abstract, feel with a strong focus on color, shape, form and movement. I find inspiration from the natural beauty of landscapes, beaches, and sky-scapes. My earliest series was created in Italy, inspired by the rolling hills, vast fields and vineyards of Tuscany. When I returned to Cape Cod, I adapted those ideas and techniques to create images of views of Pleasant Bay from my grandfather‘s home. Since then, nature has continued to guide my work from the flowing curves of sandy dunes to the open water and it’s ever changing light. I enjoy building layers of color and texture to create movement while incorporating, subtle surprises through line, color and contrasting forms. Overtime, I’ve learned to let the painting guide the process and reveal what it wants to become. I tend to work intuitively rather than rigidly. Working primarily in acrylics, I’ve recently begun exploring oil pastel to introduce additional texture, depth, and richness into my work. My love of art history continues to inspire me and artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Georgia O’Keeffe, Wayne Thiebaud and David Hockney continue to influence my approach to color, composition and interpretation of landscape. My work has been shown at local and regional exhibitions, including The Creative Arts Center in Chatham, The Cape Cod Museum Of Art, Cotuit Center For The Arts, PAAM in Provincetown, Brewster Ladies Library, Galley West and Trove in Orleans. Solo and group exhibitions in Boston, New Mexico, London, and Italy. Soon you can find me in my new studio at 204 Sisson Rd, The Cultural Arts and Municipal Building in Harwich.
