Lexy Gross

Artist Statement

Art By Lexy is the unique creative sculptural pottery work by multi award-winning Detroit DJ and co-founder of Funky D Records, Lexy Gross. A ceramic student for the last 4 1/2 years at the Oakland Community College, Royal Campus. 13 semesters, advanced courses, all instructors are Cranbrook alumni. She is also in pursuit of an art degree, been on the Dean’s list every qualifying semester, is a Phi Theta Kappa honors student maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Art is her life, as well as her husband, Tino Gross, a well-known Detroit musician/producer/songwriter. The two of them cofounded award winning indie record label, Funky D Records, in 2011. Doing both hand building and pottery, she found a deep passion for the wheel, but wanted to sculpt unique pottery items based on her love for drawing portraits and creating characters from her vivid imagination. She began placing great emphasis on altering forms and pushing the clay in order to discover how to realize her creative visions from an initial cylinder form.
All works have a backstory and are inspired by many different, spiritual and cultural influences attributed to each name and often to the colors used. Each piece is handcrafted with loving care and a unique eye for design and self-expression, inspired by real life experiences, and the common bond that creates between all of us. Pieces that speak to the human experience and an appreciation for diversity, individuality and the freedom of expression.
