Gretchen Kane
Artist Statement
I can trace the genesis of my art to a moment in childhood when I had a perception of the surrounding natural world at the same instant I received an impression of myself that revealed I was within all the life around me and that life was in me.
This momentary impression opened me to a lifetime of inquiry, studying forms of the natural world and their relationship has been the foundation and source material for my work. These observations and a steady practice of drawing are foundational to my work. Drawing brings my body, heart, and mind into relationship and initiates a connection to color, configuration and palette. Then I try to step aside and, from what might be called a subconscious level of awareness, I paint in order to enter into a space that needs to be continually discovered. And there I ask myself Is it possible to communicate and share this experience and express something of it through the process of painting?
