Artist Statement
Art to me is a life-long passion, a means to capture imagination on canvas and bring beauty and harmony to our lives. Close to my heart, I enjoy painting themes from nature - beautiful skies, sunsets, oceans, landscapes, and more. I like to paint scenes from daily life, places I have travelled to and landscapes unique to Western NY. Most paintings begin for me as a sketch - whether plein air, from photo references, or just from an amalgam of thoughts and images in my mind, and then evolve as I work to their completion. I try and bring an element of softness, depth, and luminosity accomplished by a combination of multiple layerings, blending and glazing techniques. To me each painting is like a friend, who shares my mood and the story to tell. Painting provides to me a much-needed escape from the world of reality where I can juxtapose reality with images from my own imagination. I have painted the Niagara Falls several times, many of these paintings are now in private collections. I am mostly self-taught and have painted in oil, acrylic and water. Over the years I have learnt much by reading extensively about The Hudson River School artists, chiaroscuro techniques and the works of Realist painters. I also had the opportunity to learn from Coni Minneci for many years at Partners in Art Complex. Art has always been an integral part of who I am, and, as I pause and reflect, I feel there is so much to learn, so much to create, so much to say and so much to give back!
