Artist Statement

I am a believer of the powerful expressive potential of the human figure. My goal, as a student, is to explore the beauty of the figure in its forms, rhythms, and nuances, and discover that pathos present in human design. With an understanding of figurative naturalism, I intend to create works that can go beyond the expression of beauty. What the concept may be is circumstantial to me, and when I feel moved by a narrative or idea, I hope to have the capacity to react to it and the ability to impart my work with that spirit.

My body of work personifies my exploration of the human figure, with each piece representing an attempt to find the character of the model and attitude of their pose. With every sculpt, I am pushing the limits of my ability, and pushing the piece beyond its conception as a study and into existing as an art object.

As my final year as a student approaches, I plan on orienting this last leg of my education toward the goal of being a public works sculptor. Public work has had a meaningful impact on me and my own art journey. To me, it exemplifies the selfless act that making art is and its function in facilitating a dialogue within a community. I will use my last year to build a portfolio of suitable work to apply for calls for figurative public projects.
