Artist Statement

My work explores the emotional relationship between light, movement, memory, and place. Through intentional camera movement (ICM), long exposure, and layered digital artistry, I create photographs that move beyond documentation and into interpretation—images that invite viewers to experience nature not simply as it appears, but as it feels.

I am drawn to moments that carry both visual and emotional resonance: shifting coastal horizons, winter trees softened by light, florals in quiet transformation, reflections, layered landscapes, and fleeting atmospheric details. Rather than freezing a moment in time, I use movement within the camera to create softness, rhythm, abstraction, and visual ambiguity. This allows emotion, intuition, and memory to emerge organically within the frame.

Many of my images are created entirely in-camera using a single exposure. By intentionally moving the camera and/or lens during longer shutter speeds, I transform recognizable subjects into painterly compositions that blur the line between photography and fine art. I work primarily with natural light and often photograph throughout the day, allowing changing conditions to influence both mood and interpretation.

My series work reflects recurring themes of transformation, interconnectedness, rhythm, and contemplation. In Sail on Sailor, created from the deck of a ferry traveling to Star Island, long exposures and ICM techniques transform sea and sky into meditative abstractions inspired by the music and humanity of Jimmy Buffett. In Floral Cadence, I use horizontal camera movement against dark backgrounds to create visual echoes from a single floral stem, exploring repetition, becoming, and the quiet cadence found in nature. My tessellated works build upon original photographic captures by rotating and layering the same image to form surreal, symmetrical abstractions inspired by patterns, reflections, and interconnectedness within the natural world.

While the camera remains central to my process, the digital darkroom is an important extension of my artistic practice. Using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, I refine tonal relationships, color harmony, texture, reflections, and compositional balance while remaining rooted in my original photographic captures. My goal is not manipulation for realism, but transformation for emotional truth.

I photograph with Sony Alpha cameras and produce archival pigment prints on fine art papers, often presenting the work in natural wood frames that complement the organic and contemplative qualities of the imagery. Many of my pieces are released as limited editions.

After spending more than three decades in finance and management before pursuing photography full time, I found myself drawn increasingly toward creating work that slows the viewer down and encourages reflection. Through my imagery, I hope to create spaces where viewers can pause, breathe, remember, and connect—both with the natural world and with something quieter within themselves.
