Artist Statement

My most joyful and genuine self-expression emerges when I coax a richly textured narrative from materials that might otherwise be dismissed as mere trash: my own handmade paper using various plant fibers, found objects and upcycled fabric altered with heat, stress, rust and plant pigments.

My journey as an artist is also richly textured. As a singer-songwriter, the combined texture of my voice, musical arrangement and carefully chosen lyrics envelop the listener in a complete experience. Sculpting in clay began for me as an exploration of creative process to inform my songwriting. In a twist of fate, it opened a new world of contrast between rough and smooth, neutral and vibrant, thick and delicate.
Today, I see everything through the lens of possibility. Acoustic guitar strings that would otherwise be tossed in the trash have taken on new life in my hands, and continue to play a consistent role in my art. In some pieces they take center stage. In others, they subtly accentuate the composition - their true nature not immediately apparent but appreciated upon closer inspection.

Expanding on the art of papermaking I learned from my mother, I cultivate and explore the many applications of plant fibers and natural pigments sourced both from my California garden and kitchen compost bin. My most-loved subjects are sustainable - and they surround me every day to provide inspiration.

The result is a diverse body of work, including layered collages that harmonize handmade plant fiber papers with plant-pigmented eco-prints – Botanical Mixed Media. Guitar string weavings, fiber and paper wall sculptures incorporate upcycled and unexpected materials and discovered objects. In addition to papermaking, eco-printing and natural pigment dying, I use rough stitching, melting, rusting as well as encaustic and acrylic media to create a compelling visual story.

While I employ many techniques and materials, texture always weaves its way through the narrative of my art. It may explicitly express a sense of place, or subtly hints at emotions and sentiments. In every piece I create, texture is the conduit for storytelling, evoking a tactile and visceral experience for those who engage with my work.
