Derrick C Tabor

Artist Statement

Biography: Derrick C. Tabor is a Maryland-based photographer, calligrapher, and mixed media artist whose digital prints, mixed media, and art has been exhibited throughout the District of Columbia and Maryland, including the Black Rock Center for the Arts, the Kentlands Mansion, the Strathmore Mansion, the Hill Center Galleries, Glen Echo, Blood Bank at the National Institutes of Health, NIH, Bethesda, MD, Glen Echo, and The James E Lewis Museum of Art, Morgan State University. He holds a Photography Master Certificate in Photography (with honors) from Montgomery College, Rockville, Maryland. Using techniques and tools employed in photography, quilting, collage, surrealism, digital arts, and mathematics, I treat my images as fabrics and texts. I cut them up physically and digitally to create new symbols, shapes, and fragments that I reassemble, restructure, and reshape through the lens of my lived experiences and aesthetics.

Artist Statement: Through photography and mixed media, I explore the beauty and wonders of local flora and fauna, including people. My art- based explorations and experiments involve applying digital filters and digitally and physically cutting up images to create single or multilayered collage art or photomontages. My practices are rooted in my training and experiences in the physical and social sciences, silver halide photographic research, and fiber arts.
