Artist Statement

For me, photography is the art of creating images that allow me to see what I didn’t know or was afraid to want to know about myself, and to understand. I photograph what grabs my interest and excites me, often without knowing why in that moment to be discovered later upon reflection. With photography, I explore my feelings and my values while telling stories beyond the actual subjects in the frame. Even though my process is personal, I strive to create images that will engage the viewer and let them find their own meaning in my work and explorations. To quote James Joyce - “In the particular is contained the universal.”

Though I am predominantly a landscape photographer, I usually shun grand settings and instead focus on smaller, more personal scenes. I typically create images in black and white to strip away the influences and distractions of color revealing the core emotions, textures and stories in their purest form. This allows me to get at the primary elements of what I see, and to create a more raw and engaging experience for the viewer.

To capture my images, I use both digital and traditional film cameras. When I process the images, I work exclusively in the digital domain. This allows me a greater range of exploration of the image than using a traditional darkroom, both in techniques and time. The final prints are made by myself or under my supervision using archival materials and pigment-based inks.
