Artist Statement

My painting practice explores class and the quiet forces that shape everyday American life. While grounded in observation, my work moves beyond surface representation, using ordinary moments to examine power, inequity, and resilience.

In my bartender series, I focus on figures working within social spaces that are often overlooked. Painted from life, these scenes capture bartenders in moments of pause, routine, and interaction—positions that place them both at the center of activity and at a distance from it. Bars become environments where different classes, personalities, and tensions intersect, revealing subtle dynamics of service, performance, and control.

Though representational, my paintings aim to provoke rather than simply portray. Through composition, gesture, and mood, I explore the psychological space of these figures and invite viewers to consider the complexity and dignity within roles that are often taken for granted.
