Artist Statement:

The art that I create is always based in storytelling—existing somewhere between non-objective and narrative. I don't believe in hitting the viewer hard with the meaning. Rather allowing the viewer to take it in at their own pace, or not even notice the message at all. The art can speak for itself, and embody the message, in a beautiful way.

My current work consists of a mash-up of my love of typography and the printed page with a deconstructed idea of scientific botanical illustrations from the late 1700s. Using materials taken directly from nature, in-studio printed papers and vintage ephemera, I merge these disparate elements together to give them a new voice—a kind of historical imagination. The most ordinary of elements can tell a story, and each contributes to the meaning of the piece.

What I love about the encaustic medium is its ability to play nicely with many types of manipulations, and additions of other materials. I take advantage of this property by applying many layers of color and textured media. This versatility makes the storytelling, that is at the core of all my work, come to life.
