Artist Statement

As a non-objective mixed media artist, my work is a visceral exploration of organic form, innate mark-making, and the emotional resonance of line. I am especially fascinated by abstract shapes and how they interact within a composition —how they crowd, balance, or isolate one another—and the feeling that conveys.

I follow a very intuitive, tactile process that often includes the layering of acrylics with hand-painted collage, textiles and organic materials, such as banana plank and papyrus papers. I find I’m particularly drawn to the colors, marks and patterns in early African art and see that influence in much of my work.

My ultimate goal is to create cohesive, dimensional compositions that resonate with viewers on a purely emotional, inexplicable level. Therein lies the magic in abstract art.

Currently, I work from my studio at The Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA—where many of my pieces are also displayed.
