Artist Statement

My paintings begin with a single movement.
It is a line born between intention and impulse—
a mark that conveys emotion faster than words.
Layering colors is like having a quiet dialogue.
One color pushes another away, then gently allows it to return.
Within this rhythm of tension and acceptance, the painting begins to breathe.
I studied traditional Japanese calligraphy,
where I learned that a single brushstroke can hold both hesitation and joy.
By bringing that fluid sense of movement into acrylic painting,
I seek to give form to the energy that lies beneath stillness.
From my mentor, abstract expressionist Kikuo Saito,
with whom I studied for ten years, I learned the concept of “push and pull” in color.
Warm colors advance, cool colors recede.
The interplay between color and gesture creates spatial depth
and maintains a sense of visual tension.
I practice this theory through variations in brush speed,
the thickness of layers, and the balance between transparency and opacity.
As the pigments push and draw one another in,
unexpected harmonies emerge—and in that moment, the painting feels most alive.
To me, a painting is never static. It continues to change with the viewer,
reflecting the contradictions and imbalance that mirror our own lives.
I try to capture those fleeting moments with honesty and presence.
