Artist Statement

I can explain my painting style as a hypnotic concentration because that’s exactly what happens to me slowly as the picture evolves. Then I start smiling, correcting my colors or values until
A blissful moment comes along which tells me its time to stop for a while. I enjoy painting
seascapes and landscapes for the most part. I start a picture outside because it gives me all the
atmosphere; lights, darks, breeze, sunshine or clouds, whatever is around me. I am a plein air
painter truly but sometimes if I want the control of the studio, I finish some pictures indoors.
I believe the initial atmosphere is needed for me to really know what I’m painting. I first
painted outside with watercolors at college on a trip to Italy. My biggest influences were
my Uncle Charles M. Ellis, an illustrator and my art teacher, Grace Dinsdale, a retired
professor from Yale University. I have sold numerous paintings and they are in the collections
of the Sables of Virginia, Tramposches of NY, Millers of CT, Walkers of Maryland and the Storrings in Canada.
Many others were sold at fairs and shows throughout the northeast. I have won awards
in Virginia and NY at the Danville Historic Society Annual Art Show and Brookhaven
Council of the Arts in NY.
